Postcard Day

June 26, 2020

postcard-day-coliseum

I went to help write postcards at the Evansville Coliseum for Democratic Party candidates, Ian Gamroth and John Hurley, a couple farm boys that would no doubt make great state representatives. Hopefully, they threw my cards in the trash, as my horrible handwriting is more likely to scare people than to garner votes. I tried though. It wasn’t a bad turnout. The picture is from after most people had left.

Hurley was wearing a Pioneer hat (seed corn, not stereos), which brought back memories of working on farms when I was a kid. But the real trip down memory lane was being in the Coliseum. It had been over forty years since last time I was there. Back in the seventies, it was a popular concert venue for lesser bands that couldn’t fill Roberts Stadium, a few of which did go on to fill arenas, and even make the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I probably saw Ted Nugent more than anyone. He played evansville three or four times a year back then. Of course he wan’t a right wing political asshole back then, just another gonzo speed freak guitar player jumping around in a loin cloth with pupils the size of saucers. REO Speedwagon was a close second. They played the Coliseum a lot. I know I saw a lot of other bands, but those memories are hazy. Steve Miller I only remember because The Joker was a big hit at the time and the version they played was unrecognizable.

Anyway, it was nice to get out and meet a few people and do a small bit for the cause. I’ll be doing a lot more soon, so check back.
